South Elgin residents can provide input through September 2
With help from CMAP's Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, the Village of South Elgin and community stakeholders have been engaged in an interactive, community-based process focused on updating and modernizing the Village's Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances to create a Unified Development Ordinance. The planning process will align the Village's development regulations, land use practices, and vision for the community with its recently adopted Comprehensive Plan.
Topics to be addressed will include:
- Existing land uses
- Off-street parking
- Landscaping and buffering
- Signage requirements
- Subdivision standards
- Updates to zoning districts, bulk regulations and other development standards
The planning process to revise the ordinances includes four main phases.
- Completion of a detailed existing conditions review that will build upon information compiled during the Village's comprehensive planning process.
- Creating and vetting initial recommendations; these recommendations will be based on findings from the existing conditions analysis, stakeholder interviews, and public workshops.
- Craft a Unified Development Ordinance that will streamline and integrate the content of the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances and make the document as user-friendly as possible.
- Presentation of the final document for public review and approval.

4th Annual Illinois Bike Summit
Event to promote bike friendly communities
The League of Illinois Bicyclists and Champaign County Bikes will be hosting the 4th Annual Illinois Bike Summit on October 28, 2015 in Champaign, IL. Last year's summit was attended by over 300 advocates, enthusiasts and government officials from across the state. The event will feature projects and experts working to improve bicycling conditions on the ground in various communities. The one-day conference begins with an opening plenary session followed by a lunchtime session, and four other time slots offering breakout session choices. Other options before, during, and after the main program include niche topic "coffee talks", group meetups, a local bike tour, a networking reception, and more.
The Conference will be held at the I-Hotel (1900 S. First Street, Champaign, IL) from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. A tentative list of breakout session topics includes:
- Local bike planning basics - products, process, and case studies
- Protected bike lanes and neighborhood greenways (bike boulevards)
- Complete streets tools and implementation
- Winning and implementing a grant for your trail/bikeway
- IDOT's Complete Streets policy (to be verified)
- Advocacy leadership development
- New bicycle technology
- Bicycle and trail counts
- Bike maps - paper and digital
- League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle-Friendly America program
- Safe Routes to School and child bike education programs
